Ceyhun Gündüz, General Manager of fruit exporter Alya Fruit, highlights the growth potential of Turkish blueberries:
“We are actively gathering focused data on blueberries, which have shown significant development over the past two years. Production investments initiated four years ago are now reaching their peak capacity. At Alya Fruit, we work diligently to enhance the shelf life of this product, benefiting growers. Our current priority is to elevate Turkish blueberries to a premium standard in the Far East market under our brand.”
As a relatively new crop for Turkey, ongoing research and innovation aim to improve cultivation practices. Gündüz elaborates:
“Turkish blueberries are still a developing product, with continuous advancements in breeding and cultivation techniques. The acreage dedicated to blueberries is growing, supported by potted and under-cover production methods. Over the past two years, we’ve focused on specific varieties that demonstrate potential for improved shelf life. However, as blueberries are new to Turkish growers, the industry is evolving daily, with experiments and the introduction of new varieties shaping its future.”
Ceyhun Gündüz identifies a unique market window for Turkish blueberry growers and exporters, emphasizing the opportunity to fill a global supply gap.
“When analyzing global blueberry production cycles, Türkiye is strategically positioned to address periodic shortages. The gap between April and July, in particular, sees significantly higher demand for Turkish blueberries. To capitalize on this, we have tailored our production to align with this period, aiming to meet market needs effectively,” Gündüz explains.
Logistical challenges surrounding blueberries further enhance Türkiye’s competitive edge in the global market. Gündüz elaborates:
“Our logistics strategy prioritizes air cargo transportation, enabling us to target distant markets efficiently. Blueberries require meticulous handling, and Türkiye’s geographic location—essentially at the center of global transport routes—offers a significant advantage. Quick response times via air shipments are crucial, and Turkish Airlines, alongside other air cargo companies, plays a vital role in supporting our exports. This logistical strength positions Turkish blueberries as a reliable choice for international buyers.”
