Morocco continues to expand its blueberry exports to Southeast Asia. In the 2023/24 marketing year, the country supplied 610 tons of fresh blueberries to Singapore and Malaysia, maintaining the strong performance of the previous season. Moreover, Morocco has started the 2024/25 campaign on a positive note, shipping 55 tons to these markets in December. Observations of supermarket shelves in Singapore in February 2025 further confirm the growing presence of Moroccan blueberries in the region.
Notably, Morocco’s blueberry exports to Malaysia in the 2023/24 marketing year outperformed those to Singapore. With 288 tons delivered to Malaysia, exports saw a 50% increase compared to 2022/23. In contrast, shipments to Singapore declined by 13%, totaling 322 tons.
In recent years, Singapore and Malaysia have significantly increased their blueberry imports, creating more opportunities for exporters like Morocco. In 2023/24, imports rose by 16% in Singapore and 73% in Malaysia. As a result, Morocco ranked as the third-largest blueberry supplier to Malaysia and the fourth-largest to Singapore, following China, South Africa, and Peru.
Morocco exports blueberries to Singapore and Malaysia from December to June, with peak shipments between March and May. During this period, it faces competition from Spain, the Netherlands, Peru, and especially China, which has become the main rival. While exports from Spain and the Netherlands remain lower than Morocco’s, China significantly increased its blueberry shipments to both markets in 2023/24.
Despite rising competition, Morocco’s blueberry exports in 2023/24 were successful. However, to sustain or improve these results in the current season, exporters must prioritize further enhancing berry quality.
