Preparations for the upcoming Moroccan soft fruit season are advancing as the sector recovers from challenging years marked by climate issues and commercial difficulties. Zouhir Disouria, a producer from the Larache region, reports: ‘Growers are busy preparing the soil, ordering plants, and repairing greenhouses and equipment. With the harvest just a few weeks away, spirits are high.’
Regarding strawberries, Disouria notes: ‘For the first time in three seasons, the acreage being prepared in the region has increased, likely by 20-30%. Last season saw better strawberry yields and prices compared to the previous two seasons, fueling renewed interest. The harvest is expected to start in mid-November, with a second cycle anticipated in January
Last season ended well with higher prices and yields, but storm Bernard hit last October, causing extensive damage during peak harvest. The storm also introduced phytosanitary issues, increasing costs and risks. Despite these challenges, prices for fresh and frozen raspberries are strong, making the sector appealing.
Early variety growers have started harvesting this weekend. Subsequent harvests are expected in mid-September, mid-October, and November.
Acreage is expanding with significant new plantings each season, including this year. Blueberries planted in 2022 will see their first harvest this season. The sector is very dynamic, with Morocco steadily moving towards the goal of 100,000 tonnes per season. Harvest is anticipated to begin at the end of December.
