Following years of success in Belgium, Den Berk Délice is expanding internationally by starting snack tomato cultivation in Morocco. This strategic move aims to ensure year-round supply, marking a new milestone for the company. By overseeing its own foreign production, Den Berk Délice ensures consistent quality and flavor for its customers throughout the year.
Sales & Marketing Manager Loes van der Velden explains that this decision follows years of successful collaboration with local growers. However, the company now seeks greater control over quality and harvest timing. The new greenhouse, located in the Agadir region, is equipped with advanced technologies such as a closed water system and enhanced ventilation. These innovations not only improve the quality of the tomatoes but also promote more sustainable production. By reducing gas usage during winter cultivation, the company aims to cut its gas consumption by 30% by 2030.
In addition to tomatoes, the company is expanding its product range in collaboration with Coöperatie Hoogstraten, adding seedless snack cucumbers and sweet peppers. They also plan to experiment with growing other snack vegetables in Morocco during the winter. The new Moroccan site, which will be operational in November 2024, will bring Den Berk Délice’s total acreage to over 100 hectares, reinforcing their ambition to continue growing and solidifying their position as a reliable supplier of high-quality, sustainable products.
By combining in-house and contract cultivation, the company gains the flexibility to maintain year-round supply. “We grow Miss Perfect Délice tomatoes under lights to ensure consistent quality and flavor. Our goal is to be a reliable retail partner, providing high-quality products throughout the year, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and innovation,” Loes concludes.
