Morocco’s fruit and berry exports have seen a remarkable surge, with their cumulative value hitting $7.1 billion between 2018 and 2022, as highlighted by ‘East Fruit’. In the singular year of 2022, these exports amounted to $1.7 billion. Impressively, these products found their way into a broad spectrum of markets, reaching 122 countries, with Spain, France, the Netherlands, Russia, and the UK being the primary beneficiaries.
Of these, Spain has been a consistent key importer, accounting for roughly 27% of Morocco’s total exports during the past five years. However, in 2022, Morocco slipped to become the fourth-largest supplier of fruits and berries to Spain, constituting 15% of Spain’s total imports.
Despite the significance of Moroccan exports to Spain, the report noted a significant 23% drop in revenues compared to the previous year. It’s noteworthy that blueberries made a significant contribution, generating almost one-third of Morocco’s total earnings from exports to Spain. Another notable mention was Morocco’s rise as the fourth-largest global exporter of blueberries in 2022, trailing behind Spain in third place.
France emerged as another noteworthy market, with Moroccan fruit and berry exports aggregating $1.2 billion within the 2018-2022 timeframe, forming 17% of the total revenues. During 2022, Morocco’s share in France’s imports of fruits and berries reached 6%, propelling it to become the fifth-largest supplier of these products to the European nation. The demand was particularly strong for Moroccan watermelons, melons, mandarins, avocados, raspberries, and blueberries.
The Netherlands contributed a solid 17% to Morocco’s export revenues for fruit and berries, a figure dampened by a downward trend since 2020. Similarly, export data to Russia displayed a corresponding trajectory, with Morocco’s market share in Russia plummeting by more than half over the past five years, resulting in 2022’s exports amounting to only half of those observed in 2018.
In contrast, the UK emerged as a beacon of promise for Moroccan fruit and berry exports from 2018 to 2022. Morocco’s share burgeoned sixfold, propelling exports to the UK to quintuple. This surge enabled Morocco to ascend to the fifth spot among the UK’s most substantial suppliers of fruits and berries.
